Nobody ever thought that the moving box would change. It was a cardboard rectangle of varying proportions, and could hold a few or many objects. Case closed, right? Then, environmentalism happened. We all became more aware that nature required us to be better stewards. Suddenly, moving boxes in and around Toronto started taking a different shape and color. It was an evolutionary leap of epic proportions.
Eco-Friendliness Is Driving Innovation
We’ve become a nation of eco-friendlier inhabitants over the past several generations. At the latter half of the 20th century, our awareness of how humans impacted their surroundings became evident. We watched in horror as our landfills grew with items that would take centuries to degrade. We heard about the ozone layer and its repercussions for humanity. We even got the opportunity to learn about animals and plants negatively affected by the way we treated the earth.
Little by little, we started to change as we opened our eyes. That’s when it happened: Someone took a look at the cardboard moving box and saw it was all wrong for our current environmentalism goals.
Problems With Cardboard Moving Boxes
What’s so bad about a moving box made from cardboard, corrugated or otherwise? Several things:
- It’s probably going to be tossed. Alas, even if the cardboard is recyclable, most people simply drop cardboard moving boxes in dumpsters after they’ve been used. They wind up in landfills, languishing among other trash.
- It’s an attractive nuisance to insects. We’re all for living and letting live, but that doesn’t mean we want bugs in our homes. Bed bugs, cockroaches and other critters see cardboard as fine nibbling and nesting material. This drives up their population and increases our need to use pesticides and chemicals to get them out of our homes and offices.
- It’s a waste of time to put them together and break them apart. Time is a precious resource, as precious as our world itself. Wasted time putting cardboard moving boxes together and tearing them down means our energies are spent unnecessarily. Besides, putting them together usually involved the addition of tapes and adhesive materials that are bound for the garbage pile.
Ironically, plastic has rescued Toronto from the inherent problems with cardboard moving boxes.
When Plastic Became the Safer Choice
Although plastics are not always seen as environmental solutions, they make sense to use in some capacities, including as Toronto moving boxes.
Unlike cardboard boxes, plastic boxes have several advantages:
- They can be recycled and reused. Because Blue Bins are returned to our company, they are never tossed. When they can’t be fixed or used anymore, they are appropriately recycled, keeping them out of the landfills. We have many boxes that have been used since the 1990s!
- They don’t provide homes for bugs. There’s nothing to munch on for rodents or insects in a plastic moving box, so they tend to steer clear of them. The only way they’ll ride along to a new location is in belongings.
- They can be assembled and disassembled quickly. Why waste precious moments? The make-up of a plastic moving box allows it to be assembled and disassembled, even by older kids!
If you’re like most Canadians and feel strongly about reducing your carbon footprint and ultimate impact on nature, you need to consider alternatives to traditional resources whenever and wherever possible. During your next residential or corporate move, rent plastic moving boxes in Toronto as a starting point for eco-friendlier relocation solutions.
